"Attire: —" The blank space on a wedding invitation has ruined more Saturday mornings than any dress code ever could. No guidance means every decision is yours, and every mistake is too.
Except it's not actually hard. Wedding guest dressing collapses to one formula that covers roughly ninety percent of ceremonies, plus a short list of exceptions. Here's all of it.
The formula: rich color + midi length + sleeves you can dance in
Rich color means jewel tones — burgundy, emerald, navy, deep dusty blue. They photograph beautifully in every light the day will throw at you (afternoon sun, golden hour, reception dark), they read celebratory without shouting, and they will never, ever be mistaken for competing with the bride.
Midi length is formal enough for a cathedral and easy enough for a barn. When you don't know the venue's register, mid-calf is the length that can't be wrong.

The avoid list — short but absolute
White, ivory, cream, and anything a camera flash might launder into white. Champagne is the boundary case: fine as a shoe or a bag, brave as a dress. Don't be brave at someone else's wedding.
Full black at a daytime wedding can read somber — black earns its place back after 6pm.
Sequins before sunset. Sparkle is a nighttime dialect.
Anything you have to manage. Strapless you'll hike up forty times, a slit that needs supervision, heels you can't do grass in. A wedding is an eight-hour event; clothing that requires attention steals it from the actual day.
Decode the venue, not just the invite
The invitation may say nothing, but the venue talks. Church or ballroom: lean formal — satin-touch fabric, structured heels. Garden, vineyard, barn: softer fabrics, block heels that survive lawns (the Pleated in dusty blue was practically designed for golden-hour vineyard photos). Beach: lightest fabric you own, flat sandals, and pockets if you can get them.
The eight-hour test
